Happy Diwali from a Qualified Coach

At a training course I recently attended in London, I was set an assignment – to make a visual representation of what I had gained from the training.  To say I was taken aback was an understatement. My immediate response was “but, but, but, I can’t draw”.  My entreaties were of no use of course, so off I went with my poster paper and an array of coloured pens, to somehow perform the herculean task of visually representing my thoughts on paper.

I can’t remember the last time I had drawn a picture. Probably with my children when they were toddlers. But I discovered that although my attempts at drawing were rather feeble, the challenge of doing something that took me outside my comfort zone in a non-judgmental and safe environment, unlocked the creativity in me.

In a quiet corner of the room, I let my mind roam free, I visualized roads less travelled and new journeys, sunrise and rainbows, towering trees and blue skies, upcoming Diwali  (Hindu festival of lights) …  and then slowly an idea started to take shape.

The learning that week had lit a flame for me, very much like a Diwali diya ( little clay pots lit with oil and wicks).  In turn, I want to use my diya to light many more diyas – pass on the knowledge I had gained by unlocking the creative potential of clients I coach. That’s what I attempted if rather clumsily to put to paper.

Happy Diwali everyone!

After completing the excellent 10 day Aligned Action training (conducted by Clear Coaching and People Untapped), I emerged as a qualified Business Coach. I am excited to offer this new service that fits very well with the work we do at Talking Cranes. Often we get caught up in doing and succeeding without taking the time to understand how we got to where we are and where we want to go next. This is where coaching comes in. It provides the space for focus, reflection and decision. The client chooses the focus of the conversation and the coach listens with a quality of attention that you rarely otherwise experience, makes observations, asks questions to help you unlock your thought process and creativity and establish a clear sense of direction.
