Congratulations to Pramila Jayapal, part of our Talking Cranes Community. Pramila was elected to Congress Tuesday night, and she will be the first Indian-American woman to hold a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington’s 7th Congressional District. An immigrant-rights activist, she scored an endorsement from Bernie Sanders last spring.
After her win on Tuesday, she told her supporters; “We will have to fight for social justice as never before.”
Jayapal was born in India but immigrated to the United States when she was 16. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which spawned hate crimes and discrimination against Arab, Muslim and South Asian Americans, Jayapal founded an organization called Hate Free Zone, later rebranded as OneAmerica.
Check out this video below of Pramila Jayapal talking to TC a few years ago about her work as as advocate for immigration reform and a champion of human rights and her organization OneAmerica.
